Program Overview
Leadership Johnson County is a non-political, nonprofit organization that exists to promote widespread involvement in
creative community problem solving. The program is dedicated to its mission of "cultivating and developing
informed and involved citizens working to make the community better."
LJC is a nine-month program composed of one day leadership forums to train and strengthen 21st Century leaders
How LJC Got Started
The LJC program got its start more than 16 years ago, after a study conducted by Duke Energy, formerly Cinergy/PSI, showed
that county residents were concerned about future leadership. Those surveyed worried about who would fill future
volunteer vacancies and board leadership positions – and if those leaders were qualified to lead and serve.
Duke Energy and Franklin College officials convened and agreed to create a community leadership program to bring together
a cross-section of county residents, and in 1995 the LJC Program began with 23 participants.
The LJC Goal
Leadership Johnson County is helping to create a place where the citizens and the government work together and where people
want to raise their families. LJC is confident that as it works towards its goal, Johnson County will become a place
populated by citizens who value diversity, who want to create a vibrant local democracy, who have passion for community
involvement, who are proud of their historical and county identity, who express their influence region-wide and who work
to improve the physical, social and cultural well being of all county residents.
"LJC should be commended for its ability to bring together very diverse people and cultivate their leadership
potential to make a difference in Johnson County. I have been very impressed with the quality of speakers and
comprehensive learning activities regularly presented. Much of the information that I have learned helps me be a
better school administrator, father and community member."
