LJC 2009 Community Projects
One of the key elements of the program is to help participants master the art of collaboration, through class projects.
LJC participants form groups to select, research, design and execute a project that addresses an issue of importance to the
community. The participants use the projects to increase their understanding of an issue or challenge facing the
county and to take action to improve the community.
These are the 2009 Class Projects:
Seeds for Survivors
This group helped Johnson County disaster survivors of the floods and tornadoes landscape their homes. The group
worked with the Johnson County Community Organizations Active in Disasters (JCOAD) group to select three homes in Edinburgh,
Franklin and White River Township. The group also collaborated with Central Nine Career Center students to create
landscape designs for each house. On Saturday, June 6 the group will gather donated supplies to deliver to the homes,
and will begin landscaping on Sunday, June 7.
Project Members: Kristin Beck, James Bryant, Connie Hann, Natalie Morgan, Tim Rinehold, Adam Treibic, Brenda Wilkerson
BOLT: Building Outstanding Leaders Today
This group collaborated with Youth Philanthropy Initiative of Johnson County to help build leadership skills in middle and
high school students. The group presented five leadership modules at the YPI kick-off event held Wednesday, Feb. 25,
2009. The modules focused on getting to know your team, communication and team building. Over 40 children,
adult sponsors and volunteers from Indian Creek, Whiteland, Edinburgh and Atterbury Job Corp attended the event.

STEP: Students Together Exercising Permanently
This group started walking clubs in three of the Johnson County middle schools. The clubs met at least once a week
and counted their steps using pedometers. They logged their results and each milestone they reached earned them a
prize. The group hosted an event on April 25 to recognize these students for their achievement, where each student
received a t-shirt, bracelet and backpack. The group also invited local organizations to attend and participate as
well.
Project Members: Tessa Key, Chris Osborne, Tiffany Rebich, Curt Brough, Angela Coy, Stacy Duckworth, Kyle Miller
Journey Johnson County
This group created several promotional items, including a website, a coloring book and video, with a unifying theme for
visible identification of Johnson County designed to target all areas of tourism. The hope is that the tools will
continue to be used by a future tourism group. On Thursday, April 23 2009, “Journey Johnson County”
presented at a public forum, at the Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, with the purpose of showing why tourism is important to
Johnson County and introducing the tourism tools.
Project Members: Brooke Lang, Janette Koon, Pat Rather, Rich Arkanoff, Don Cummings, Eileen Meyer, Ric Schlosser, Chris Menze
